Already familiar with pineapple, mango and papaya? Here are three more tropical fruits you may encounter in Thailand. Each has its own character, from an unusual aroma to an unfamiliar appearance.
1. Durian: a strong aroma and soft flesh
Ripe durian is known for a powerful smell that not everyone enjoys. Beneath the spiky skin is soft flesh with a sweet, rich flavour. Reactions vary: some people become fans, while others are content with a first taste. There is no need to expect that you will necessarily like it.
2. Rambutan: an unusual-looking fruit
The reddish round fruits with soft hairs are easy to spot on a stall. Inside is pale, juicy flesh with a gentle sweet flavour and a seed in the centre. Its unusual appearance is memorable, and its flavour is quite different from familiar apples and citrus fruits.
3. Mangosteen: segments beneath a thick rind
The pale segments may resemble garlic, but their flavour is fruity, juicy and sweet-tart. Some people notice hints of grape or peach. Seeds may be present inside, so eat the flesh with care.
If you want to take fruit home, first check your carrier’s conditions and import rules. Read more about luggage categories in our article on taking purchases out of Thailand.
