When buying souvenirs, distinguish customs restrictions, government permits and airline rules. Requirements depend on the item; a shop receipt alone does not replace required documents.
Buddha images and works of art
Buddha images, antiques and cultural objects are categories for which you should check Fine Arts Department requirements. Do not rely on the souvenir’s size alone.
Animals, plants and natural materials
Check permit requirements for animals, plants and their parts, including a seedling without a pot. Do not assume sand, coral, shells or animal products are ordinary permitted souvenirs: their origin, species and conservation restrictions matter.
Fruit and food
For durian, including dried or packaged products, separately check your carrier’s conditions and destination import rules. Packaging does not automatically make an item permitted.
Jewellery and animal products
Keep purchase documents. For ivory, products made from protected animal skins and other natural materials, check restrictions for the particular species.
Vapes and hookahs
Do not treat these as ordinary travel belongings. Thailand prohibits electronic cigarette imports; official guidance also covers hookah restrictions. See Thai government information.
