A family trip depends on more than sand and a hotel view: consider the area, facilities and sea conditions on the day. These five beaches offer a starting point for comparison.
Karon
Known for pale quartz sand and a long shoreline. The area has holiday facilities and green spaces. Assess waves and the slope of the beach separately when choosing a spot near the water.
Kata
Compare Kata Yai and Kata Noi in this part of the island. Kata Yai offers cafés and resort facilities, while Kata Noi has a more intimate atmosphere. A sandy beach alone does not guarantee safe swimming.
Nai Harn
An option for a quieter atmosphere with fewer noisy nightlife venues. It can be a pleasant place for family time and walks, but calm seas cannot be promised for every date.
Bang Tao
An area with different hotel styles, including upscale properties, and a long beach. Consider distances and the convenience of everyday walks when choosing a hotel. Water depth and entry conditions vary along the shore.
Kamala
A bay beach with soft sand, green hills and places to walk. It is another area to compare when planning a family holiday on the island.
